39. "False door" was the most important part of a tomb chapel, as it enabled the deceased's soul to contact the world of the living. In the chapel of Meref-nebef two such doors have been sculpted, on either side of the entrance. On the photo: the southern "false door" as seen by archaeologists just before the removal of the debris.
